Foster Care Needed for Kittens

The Animal Care League is looking for people to become Foster Volunteers for some of our tiniest animals, the kittens.  The shelter gets many, many kittens ranging in age from newborns to 3-months old who are too young to be adopted and in need of Foster Care.  Kittens are brought in as stray or abandoned litters, transferred from overcrowded shelters or given up by owners who can no longer care for them.

Foster Volunteers take the kittens into their own homes and raise them until they are old enough for adoption, at around 10-12 weeks.  The Foster Volunteers are responsible for all aspects of care for the kittens, including bringing them back to the shelter every two weeks for vaccines and a check up by our veterinarian. Foster Volunteers need to spend time playing with, handling and socializing the kittens to help them become ready for adoption and are in close contact with the Kitten Foster Care Coordinator.

The length of time foster kittens stay in a home depends on how old they are when they come in. Older kittens may only need a week or two of fostering, while younger kittens may need two months or more. Kittens can also move to different Foster Homes at various stages in their development.

Some of the basics to know about kitten Foster Care include: having a separate room in the house, with a door, for the kittens. This can be a bathroom, bedroom or spare room, but one that can be easily cleaned (tile or hardwood floors are best).  Foster kittens may not interact with your own pets. If you have cats, they must be current on Rabies and Distemper vaccines. There is a $25 fee you would need to pay so we can license you with the State Department of Agriculture as a Foster Home. We will provide all the supplies you need: medical care, food, litter boxes, litter, toys, towels and blankets, cat carriers, etc. You provide the love and warmth of a family that some of these little ones have never known.

Be prepared that it may be difficult emotionally to say good-bye to your foster kittens when it is time for adoption. But it is also very rewarding to see them find their forever homes and know that you were a part of their success story.

If you are interested in becoming a Kitten Foster Care Volunteer, you can fill out the on-line kitten foster care application. You can e-mail the application to info@animalcareleague.org or fax the form to 708-848-0172. You can also call the shelter at 708-848-8155 and ask for Jill for more information.
Thank You!
