Obedience Classes

The Animal Care League is pleased to offer a variety of obedience classes!  Our classes, starting with Puppy Kindergarten, are designed to help you and your K-9 companion become a successful team!    
The Animal Care League is also happy to announce a new partnership with For Your K-9, a premier dog training group headquartered in Melrose Park.  As part of our partnership, For Your K-9 will begin offering classes at our 1011 Garfield Street, Oak Park location beginning January 2013.  For Your K-9 offers many wonderful obedience training options, as well as sport classes such as Agility, Nose Work and Aqua-exercise.

Advanced Registration is Recommended For all Classes!
All classes require dogs to have proof of at least two (2) Distemper/Parvo vaccinations.  Dogs over 4-months must also have proof of current rabies vaccination.  Written proof is required at first class.


In Home Training Classes:
Are you too busy to attend regular group lessons but want your dog to behave better?  Our training staff will come to your home and provide you with the skills you need to help your K-9 companion learn some basic manners. $50.00/hour.

PUPPY KINDERGARTEN  (for puppies 2-5 months old) $100/4 classes
Get your puppy off to a good start by socializing with other pups and their humans! This class if for puppies under 5-months old and focuses on a major puppy-related issue each week with a heavy emphasis on socialization.  Every session will include discussion of typical puppy behavior with question and answer time during every class!   ***This class satisfies training requirement for puppies adopted from the ACL***      

Puppy Kindergarten:  Tuesdays, 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
April 23.......Class 1  Crate training and housebreaking
April 30.......Class 2  Leash walking
May 7......... Class 3  Sit and Down
May 14........Class 4  Recall

BASIC OBEDIENCE CLASS:  $120/ACL adopters; $140 all others
For Your K-9 Basic Obedience Class is for dogs 5 months and older.  We use today's more progressive positive motivational training techniques.  Firm but gentle handling, patience, respect and practice will make you and your dog a successful team.  During this class you will teach your dog basic skills.  Subjects like nipping and biting, jumping on people, problem barking, digging and chewing will also be discussed.  Training helps you establish a special bond with your dog using positive reinforcement methods.   It is this positive relationship that increases the bond and teamwork between trainer and dog that leads to excellence in the performance of learned behavior.  

Basic Obedience:  Wednesdays, 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Basic Obedience:  Saturdays,  11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
March 16**, March 23, March 30, April 6, April 13, April 20, April 27  (**Orientation, dog does NOT attend)

K-9 NOSE WORK:  $120 ACL adopters; $140 all others
Benefits of this class:

      Can be done with limited resources
      Confidence building for timid or shy dogs
      Redirection of rough and high-energy dogs
      Build focus for unfocused and aroused dogs

OFF LEASH OBEDIENCE
The primary goal of this class is to gain verbal control while beginning on and off-leash work around distractions.  Classes are tailored to each handler/dog team.  Dogs are introduced to working off-leash in a safe and fun environment with games and structured exercises.  Note: this class covers steps towards off-leash control.  Distraction work is the focus.  

Off-Leash Obedience:  Saturdays 11:15 a.m. - 12:15 a.m.
